WEST CENTRAL WAGON COMPANY LIMITED

The West Central Wagon Company Limited took over the works of the former Worcester Engine Works Company Limited from 20th July 1872.

William Wainwright who lived at nearby Rainbow Villa in Station Walk was the manager of the wagon company. The West Central Wagon Company Limited were manufacturers of railway and tramway carriages and agricultural implements. They also supplied wheels and axles and were a contractor for general ironwork.

The enterprise was a short-lived one. The plant and equipment was offered for sale in 1876 but the premises remained empty until used for the Worcestershire Exhibition in 1882.

The site passed through various hands including Dutton & Co being purchased by Heenan and Froude Ltd in 1903.

This 1882 Ordnance Survey map shows the West Central Wagon works. Mckenzie & Holland occupied the site on the south side of Shrub Hill Road marked as 'Vulcan Works' , whilst the sidings also went across Tolladine Road into the gas works. The 'Vinegar Works' branch is the line to the far right of Lowesmoor Works (Iron) and Holy Trinity Church.
