CLASS 27 DIESEL ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVES

Sixty-nine (69) class 27 locomotives were built by the Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Co Ltd in Smethwick.

They originally carried No.D5347 to D5415. In essence they were the same as an earlier batch of class 26 locomotives (D5300 to D5346) but the class 27's were fitted with a more powerful Sulzer engine rated at 1,250 r.p.m. instead of 1,160 r.p.m.

D5382 at Worcester Shrub Hill

This incredibly rare photograph is the only one known to the MIAC that shows a BRCW built class 27 locomotive in the 'up' parcels bay at Worcester Shrub Hill Station on . From built until 1970/71 the class 27's were based at various depots in the London Midland Region and made occasional visits to Worcester, often as in this case on Parcels trains as indicated by the '3G75' headcode. This locomotive and the rest of London Midland class 27's was later transferred to depots in Scotland. The consensus of opinion suggests that this is the only member of the class painted in two-tone green livery. Photograph taken by Pete Wilcox on 9th June 1966.

MIAC records shows very few appearances of class 27's with just two records. No.D5389 was at Worcester on 2nd April 1965 and No.D5396 similarly on 19th May 1966.
