BREDONVALE PRODUCTS LTD, DEFFORD

(grid reference SO 914424)

This was basically a farm situated on the banks of the River Avon at Defford about half a mile west of Defford station.

There are various stories as to the reason that there was a narrow gauge railway on this site. It is suggested that in 1965, Bredonvale Products Ltd intended to use the locomotives as part of a small concrete production works.

Bredonvale Products Ltd ceased production shortly thereafter (if indeed it ever started), although in about 1966 the home made locomotive was renovated and both locomotives were used to haul timber in the construction of a boat house on the banks of the river.

By 1969 it is certain that the railway was out of use as by this time the locomotives here were stored inside a barn and quite out of reach of photography.

The Industrial Railway Society state that the home made locomotive was built around 1950 with the engine from a Glyn lorry and the gear from a winch. It was said to be kept only for sentimental reasons.

The Eckington Wharf Circular Walk provides a view of the site of Bredonvale Products Ltd. albeit it from the other bank of the river.
