STAFF AT WORCESTER ENGINE SHEDS

With many thanks to Gordon Campbell we can reproduce below four photographs of railwaymen at Worcester in the 1960s.

Railway Staff at Worcester

This photographs shows of group of railway workers outside the front of the Locomotive Repair Works at Worcester. From left to right they are Nobby Clarke, Ernie Payne; Dennis Carter, Jimmy Cadd, Tommy Reeves, Cyril Chance, Bob Kendrick, Jack Dowdswell, Ian Petri and Gordon Campbell.

Ron Ashby has advised that the previously unidentified person standing in front of Cyril Chance is Tommy Reeves worked in the machine shop turning wagon wheels back to standard. (Added 17/6/2008.)

The three nameplates were formerly carried by GWR "County" class 4-6-0 locomotives designed by Hawksworth. They were respectively No.1017 "County of Hereford", No.1029 "County of Worcester" and No.1017 "County of Hereford". Although this class of locomotive was frequently seen at Worcester none was ever based there and the three whose nameplates are depicted above were withdrawn in 1962.

This is a portrait of Horris Merry.

These two gentlemen who are standing on the footplate of an unidentified locomotive are Dennis Carter (left) and Jack Dowdswell (right).

This photograph shows Gordon Campbell on the footplate of ex-GWR "Castle" class 4-6-0 No.4074 "Caldicot Castle". The locomotive was withdrawn in April 1963. The other Caldicot Castle is in Monmouthshire just south of Chepsow.
